Seeks Residential Outreach and Community Involvement Coordinator

The City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) Residential Events and Outreach Team are seeking one (1) coordinator to assist with the City’s changes to the Curbside Collection System. The ideal candidate will possess an interest in recycling, composting, waste prevention and community engagement. Join the residential outreach team to assist residents with food scrap collection and every other week garbage. Strong organization, responsiveness, communication and customer service skills set are musts.

The coordinator will work under the guidance of BPS staff on a variety of tasks, including staffing information booths, presentations and conducting a door-to-door outreach campaign.

Position responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Organizing presentations, events and canvassing.
Recruiting and coordinating diverse volunteers and organizations to partner with BPS.
Managing door-to-door outreach logistics.
Creating evaluation and final report.
Attending staff and project meetings.

Required qualifications:
Strong awareness of and commitment to sustainability and recycling.
Strong customer service skills, including phone, e-mail and in person.
Excellent people skills, a positive attitude, and self-motivation.
Cultural competency and outreach to diverse communities.
Previous experience recruiting, training and supervising volunteers.
Previous door-to-door outreach experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook.
Ability to work successfully with limited supervision.
Access to reliable transportation with a valid drivers’ license with good driving record.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Desired qualifications:
Experience representing a governmental or other organization to the public.
Bilingual and experience working with Spanish speaking community.

Pay: $16.00 per hour with no additional benefits for this full-time, temporary position.

Hours: An average of 40 hours per week, January 17 through May 31, 2012 (20 weeks). The work schedule will be flexible, but generally Tuesdays to Saturdays, including evenings.
