operations. The Multnomah County Office of Sustainability’s mission is to
enhance the livability of our community and to ensure that current and future
generations’ needs are met. We are committed to the “triple bottom line” of
sustainability – environmental protection, sustainable economic development,
and social equity.
We are searching for a Resource Conservation Coordinator who shares this same
passion for the “triple bottom line” and wants to provide leadership on innovative policies
and programs in our community and within County operations that will reduce the fiscal
and environmental impacts of operational resource use and waste stream.
The selected Coordinator will be a member of the county’s Office of Sustainability and will
report to the Sustainability Director. You will provide leadership on major policy efforts
such as the 2009 Climate Action Plan, the 2008 Green Building Policy, the 2006
Portland/Multnomah Toxics Reduction Strategy and the county’s Waste Prevention &
Recycling plans. You will also assist in the development and support of new policies and
projects for internal government operations and in the community. As part of these duties,
you will be responsible for establishing new and innovative programs that will reduce
resource consumption (i.e. energy, water, and paper) and the amount of waste generated
at the county. A critical responsibility will be to lead multiple county and community
teams successfully as a project manager. In addition you will be responsible for staff
education about sustainable purchasing and recycling, leading stakeholder meetings,
tracking and evaluating the county’s waste stream, integrating equity principles and
outcomes into policies/projects, developing outreach and communication materials, and
assisting in strategic planning, collaborating and providing technical assistance to
community members and peers in local government on effective resource conservation
and waste reduction strategies.
Successful candidate profile:
Knowledge of sustainability principles (3E’s: environment, economy,
equity)
Knowledge of resource conservation principles
Knowledge and skills with team management
Knowledge and skills with project management
Knowledge of and skills to develop and lead resource conservation, waste
reduction, recycling and/or composting projects
Knowledge of marketing and community-based social marketing
Knowledge of data management and analysis
Knowledge of and skills in community organizing
Knowledge of and skills in facilitating organizational and community
change
Knowledge of fundraising through grants
Qualified applicants will have knowledge of and experience with resource conservation
projects, team management and project management. Strong writing, research,
communication, and critical thinking skills are essential. Also essential is a demonstrated
ability to lead multi-stakeholder projects and the ability to build strong working
relationships with the community, other local governments and within the county. This
position demands a positive can-do attitude, well-developed social skills, a sense of
humor and the ability to achieve outstanding results.
