Development Intern (volunteer position)
Reports to: Grant Programs Coordinator and Development Associate
The mission of Wild Salmon Center (WSC) is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. We devise and implement practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity.
WSC is an international organization with programs in the Russian Far East, Kamchatka, Japan, the Olympic Peninsula, and on the Oregon North Coast. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center.
The Position…
The Development Intern will work with experienced development professionals, the Grant Programs Coordinator and Development Associate, primarily to ensure that WSC’s fundraising database, Raiser’s Edge (RE), is compliant with the prospect management system and to research individual, foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities. He/she will be responsible for entering new constituents in RE and update current constituents according to WSC’s new prospect management protocol. Other projects may be assigned according to the individual’s level of interest and skill.
A successful intern will be able to perform functions in Raiser’s Edge database; become acquainted with foundations and individual donors that support environmental issues; gain competency in tools used for prospect research; gain knowledge in foundation cultivation and solicitation; and hone skills related to nonprofit development.
The internship is a volunteer position envisioned for 10-12 hours per week for approximately three to six months.
Education…
A Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in a related field is required.
Position Responsibilities…
• Enter and maintain individual, foundation, corporate, and government records in the Raiser’s Edge database, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the information entered
• Identify and research prospective funders using the Foundation Center Online database and other search tools
• Assist Development Associate with mass mailings and outreach events
• Assist Grant Programs Coordinator with grant reports, proposal writing and general management of deadlines
• Perform other duties, as needed
Position Requirements…
• Proficiency with a fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge preferred)
• High level of attention to detail and excellent writing and analytical skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook
• Research experience (philanthropic background preferred)
• Enthusiasm for the mission of Wild Salmon Center and interest in honing skills related to non-profit development
Compensation…
This position may provide an intern with skills and experience useful in future employment opportunities. The terms of the volunteer position will be negotiated based on the successful applicant’s goals and availability.
