Sam Hagerman, co-founder and owner of Hammer & Hand, has nearly 30 years of experience working as a carpenter, builder, and business owner. Hailing from a family of Montana ranchers, contractors and public servants, Sam learned carpentry at a young age. He moved to Oregon in 1984 to attend Reed College, and made the transition from carpenter to business owner in 1995 when he founded Hammer & Hand, the residential contracting firm that emphasizes sustainability in the built and work environments.

Sam and his company hold the full complement of sustainable building affiliations and certifications and have built homes using a wide range of techniques, including rammed earth, straw bale, stucco, SIPS, cedar chip and clay slip, ICFs, and advanced framing. He is also an active leader in policy and code issues at the local, state and national levels. He currently serves as the President of Passive House Alliance US and has been active in Passive House Northwest’s efforts to get the Passive House standard recognized by the Oregon Reach Code. Among several ongoing Passive House projects, Sam is building the Karuna House, a home designed to meet Passive House, Minergie-Eco/P, LEED Platinum, and net-zero standards.

Marshall Runkel is a partner at the Portland-based environmental services company, GreenHome by EcoTech. EcoTech was founded a decade ago. It decommissions underground storage tanks and does radon detection and remediation work. Marshall joined the company in 2008 to open its GreenHome line of energy efficiency services.

Marshall worked with other Home Performance with Energy Star companies to found the Home Performance Contractors Guild of Oregon. The Guild helped shape the Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Technology Act of 2009 which provided a legislative framework for the Clean Energy Works Oregon. Before joining EcoTech, Marshall worked in variety of public policy roles for nonprofits and local governments.
