Learn More about Gresham’s Feathered Friends-Volunteer to Survey Birds in May and June

Find out what's flying in 2010 by surveying Gresham skies as part of the citywide volunteer bird survey team. Birds are one of nature’s indicators of the health of our land and water ecosystems. City staff use the survey information to develop strategies to support native birds. Knowing what bird species live around the city helps us develop restoration plans and choose what types of bird nest boxes to install and where they should be placed.

In 2009, volunteers observed 78 species of birds including spotted towhees, cedar waxwings, lazuli buntings, and a great horned owl.

Volunteers survey in pairs; more experienced birders will be paired with less experienced volunteers. Families and inexperienced volunteers are welcom. Volunteers are required to attend one of the protocol training sessions, which will cover survey techniques and a review of species identified in 2009.

Two training dates: Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. to noon; or Wednesday, April 21, from 5 to 8 p.m., both at Gresham City Hall. Surveys are conducted weekday or weekend mornings in May and June.
