Daybreak Cohousing will host a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, April 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the community at 2525 North Killingsworth Street in North Portland. The public event, which will mark the six month anniversary of the first residents moving into the new, sustainable development, will feature tours of the facilities, light refreshments, and music by Celtic harpist Elizabeth Nicholson. City Councilwoman Amanda Fritz and other officials will speak at 2:30 pm. A potluck supper will also be served after the event concludes at 4 p.m. in the Daybreak common house. The event is free and open to the public.
Daybreak is a 30-unit, multigenerational, cohousing community featuring sustainable design and shared resources for residents. It was named one of the top 10 green cohousing developments in the U.S. by Natural Home magazine in 2009. The project won a Build Local Challenge award for project contractor B+G Builders for use of used FSC-certified material for 100 percent of its framing lumber, plywood and solid wood interior trim. It has received certification from the Energy Trust of Oregon.
Daybreak Cohousing is continuing to recruit new members for the community. Daybreak has one, two and three bedroom units, 12 of which are currently occupied. The eco-friendly facility is accessible for persons with disabilities. The current residents of Daybreak cohousing include individuals who have recently moved from Washington DC, Chicago and Los Angeles to become members.
Daybreak Cohousing is located two blocks from the intersection of N Killingsworth and N Greeley. It is on the #72 bus line, two blocks from the #35 line and is approximately a ten minute walk from the Interstate MAX yellow line.
