Calling all gardeners and people interested in learning about gardening! Come on out to the Tin Shed Garden Cafe on Tuesday, April 20 for the Alberta Coop Grocery's April open forum. Enjoy some of the Tin Shed's food and drink, bring a seed or plant start if you have any you'd like to exchange, and hear about the Urban Farm Collective's exciting new project! Also one lucky attendee will win a grand prize: a free work party in their garden (see below for more info).
The Urban Farm Collective is working to build a community around sustainably growing food within the city, taking yards and vacant lots and transforming them into productive gardens. This season (their second) they'll also bring the community together around a weekly barter market where home gardeners can bring their excess produce and exchange it. Members contributing their time or land to the UFC plots earn barter-dollars that they can spend at these markets to buy fresh local organic food. You can find more information at their website at http://www.urbanfarmcollective.com.
Now the UFC is looking for people who want to participate in their vision! There is a place for gardeners of all levels of experience (the UFC gardens are a great way for beginners to learn about gardening) as well as people who have unused land that they would like to see turned into productive plots. If you fit any of these categories, come to the Tin Shed on Tuesday, April 20 to learn more about how you can participate and receive local organic produce as your compensation!
This event will also feature the Coop's second annual Seed and Plant Start Swap. Bring whatever starts you have that you'd like to exchange.
Prize!
Need some beds double-dug? Some weeding done? Then the evening's grand prize will be right up your alley: The Urban Farm Collective will throw a free work party in your yard, taking care of whatever you need to increase its productivity.
Hope to see you there!
