Celebrate World Environment Day on Wednesday, June 5 with the Port of Portland. The Port will host a walking tour of Portland International Airport and portions of our LEED Platinum headquarters building. Join us and learn about the many sustainability solutions in place at PDX. Whether it's reducing waste or our carbon footprint, providing alternate transportation options or using natural systems to treat wastewater onsite, there's a lot to be proud of at Portland's gateway to the world. The PDX Sustainability Tour will take place June 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Over the past decade, Oregon has attracted global attention as a center for design and innovation, much of it deeply committed to social good. On Wednesday, June 6, at the Mercy Corps Action Center in Portland, you'll get to hear first-hand how our unique creative community is addressing some of the world's most pervasive humanitarian issues: clean water! It's a story about Oregon's creative strengths, and a window into the future of design in the Pacific Northwest.

Elinor Ostrom, Social Innovation
A 2009 Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, Elinor Ostrom has done ground-breaking analysis of economic governance, especially of common pool resources, emphasizing how humans interact with ecosystems to maintain long-term sustainable resource yields. Among her numerous publications are Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action, Foundations of Social Capital, and Institutions, Ecosystems and Sustainability. Ostrom is Distinguished Professor, Indiana University.
David Bollier, Innovating in the Commons
David Bollier has devoted the past decade to exploring the commons as a new paradigm of economics, politics and culture. He was Founding Editor of Onthecommons.org, a Senior Fellow at the Norman Lear Center at USC, and co-founder and board member of Public Knowledge. He is the author of three books, Silent Theft: The Private Plunder of Our Commons Wealth, Brand Name Bullies: The Quest to Own and Control Culture, and Viral Spiral: How the Commoners Built a Digital Republic of Their Own.
Alan AtKisson, Accelerating Innovation
Alan AtKisson helps governments, businesses and nonprofits accelerate innovation for sustainability. In 1990, he co-founded the Sustainable Seattle initiative, and went on to lead the National Indicators Program, Redefining Progress, the Belaton Group, and his own consulting company, the AtKisson Group. He is the author of two books: Believing Cassandra: An Optimist Looks at a Pessimist's World, and The ISIS Agreement: How Sustainability Can Improve Organizational Performance and Transform the World.
Roger Pielke, Jr.
Political scientist Roger Pielke, Jr. maintains that we'll make better progress on climate if we focus on energy innovation. Pielke is Professor of Environmental Studies at University of Colorado, and has held leadership positions at NCAR, CIRES, and the Breakthrough Institute. He is also author, co-author or co-editor of seven books, including The Honest Broker: Making Sense of Science in Policy and Politics, and The Climate Fix: What Scientists and Politicians Won't Tell you About Global Warming.
